Classification of Aluminum Granules Produced from Waste Foil

Introduction

Aluminum is recovered from waste foil by preliminary reduction in hammer mills followed by a furnace operation that burns off attached paper, polyethylene, etc. The furnace product is ground to meet varying size specifications by operating a hammer mill closed circuit with a Kason classifier.

Method and results
A 3-deck 48" diameter Kason VIBROSCREEN is used to deliver 4 product fractions simultaneously and a wide variety of screens are used to produce granule sizes for many different end uses. A typical screen arrangement is 20- over 40- over 100-mesh. The granules are very angular in shape and the particle size distribution could lead to "near size" blinding on all screens finer than 30-mesh. The unit is equipped with Kason rubber ball anti-blinding devices that completely eliminate this problem. The Kason is fed at approximately 2000 lbs/hour and all fractions are delivered containing less than 10% undersize. Product fractions discharge directly into 45-gallon metal drums for shipment.

Features

1. The Kason's 3-dimensional motion combined with special anti-blinding devices result in the production of clean fractions even though this material was found to severely blind most conventional vibrating screens. Equipment replaced on this service required hand brushing at least once per hour to avoid complete plugging of the screen.

2. Clean operation is obtained on this dusty product by employing a metal cover assembly and flexible rubber connectors to the 4 product discharge spouts.

3. The product range is large and the fact that a screen cloth can be changed in 15 minutes or less allows the user to meet customer's requirements with minimal down time.
