Special VIBROSCREEN Unit Withstands Corrosive Chemical
When Lonza, Inc., Williamsport, PA, expanded its operation by installing another line to produce dichloro dimethyl hydrantion, it specified a Hastelloy-C VIBROSCREEN unit to withstand this acidic powder used for disinfecting recreational and commercial water. Lonza managers believe that Hastelloy-C can prevent two potential problems. Particles of corroded milder steel are prevented from entering the product and a separator constructed of a more corrosion resistant material is likely to last longer. Lonza uses circular screen separators to remove undesirable lumps in its product. Customers rely on Lonza's powder to dissolve quickly and give them protection from waterborne pathogens. Lumps degrade product effectiveness, requiring their removal. Metal particles in the product also limits its effectiveness and could discolor clear water.
Since the plant engineer/manager knew Kason and its commitment to solve special problems, he called on their local representative who agreed without hesitation to help Lonza meet its corrosion and contamination challenges.
The somewhat round particles will blind the screen if left without attention. To
prevent blinding, Lonza uses a Kason Four-finger Flex Sweep that keeps the screen clean, according to Lonza Plant Engineer Elmer Parlante. The VIBROSCREEN unit must keep up with the discharge from the upstream dryer and provide a constant flow of on-size powder to the hopper and packaging operation downstream. Thus, Lonza must prevent screen blinding.
During the first part of 1994, the 60 in. (1530 mm) diameter VIBROSCREEN operated according to expectations. If market demand increases as anticipated during the summer, Lonza will separate lumps from the product to meet this demand. Lonza operates throughout the year to meet the peak demand in early summer.
The Hastelloy-C successfully stands up to, the acidic powder and the VIBROSCREEN unit operates well, according to plant manager Ron De Feo. By meeting its customers' needs, Kason has helped a manufacturer solve his separation problems. It is not surprising that when a broad range of processors was surveyed, analysis of replies showed that those who use Kason's standard and custom separators, sifters and sieves are satisfied with Kason product quality and service.
