Cargill Salt

"Flo-Thru" Screener Scalps Oversize Salt Crystals

Cargill Salt of Watkins Glen, NY, installed a new processing line last year to produce high quality salt for cheese makers, bread bakers, and soap manufacturers. These customers need salt crystals of only a specific size, and any oversize lumps or crystals would jeopardize the quality of their cheese, bread and soap; and thus must be excluded from the salt that they use.

After discussing processing line equipment with an OEM, Cargill Salt managers selected a 72 in. (1830 mm) diameter, stainless steel Kason ‘Flo-Thru' circular screen separator since it meets the requirement of fitting into a space with low headroom. It fits easily into a small area, and operates at about 50 tons per hour (45 metric tons per hour) through a 12 mesh market grade screen, explained Cargill Salt Processing Supervisor Elizabeth Luke. Kason employees installed support strips that extend from the screen center to the screen edge like the spokes of a wheel to withstand the impact associated with the 50-tons-per-hour throughput rate. The unit has been operating well since May 1994.

Cargill Salt can not tolerate lower throughput rates associated with blinding since it strives to supply as many customers as possible with fast delivery of high quality salt. A ball tray under the special screen helps dislodge salt particles that would otherwise start to blind the screen.
