Dry Classification of Yeast

Introduction
In the brewing industry, byproduct yeast is de-bittered for edible food or dried yeast solids as an animal feed additive. Particle size specifications must be maintained and Kason VIBROSCREEN Circular Vibratory Separators are used for dry classification of ground drum-dried product.

Method and results
Product requirements vary and both single and double deck Separators are in use. For example, one user classifies flake yeast to produce a product at -10
+48-mesh. A double deck 48" Kason continuously recycles + 10 mesh fraction back to a grinder and -48 fines are sold as a special product. Feed analysis approximately 10% +10-mesh, 70% -10 +48 and 20% of -48. The 48" diameter Kason separator accepts a feed of 2300 lbs/hour (including recycle), and continuously delivers 3 cleanly sized fractions.

Features
1. The Kason produces yeast that constantly meets rigid particle size distribution specifications. This is accomplished at very high capacity per square foot of screen cloth when one considers the low bulk density of the feed material and its tendency to blind conventional vibrating screens.

2. Clean operation is obtained by employing a metal cover assembly and flexible rubber connectors to the 3 product discharge spouts.

3. Screen cloth can be changed in 15 minutes or less, facilitating the production of different grades to meet customer requirements.

Specifications
- Single- or double-deck Kason VIBROSCREEN Circular Vibratory Screeners.
- Stainless steel or epoxy-coated carbon steel construction, dependent upon end product use.
- Standard discharge spouts for all fractions.
- Screens to product requirement, most frequently between 10- and 100-mesh.
- Capacity varies, dependent upon screens used and particle size distribution of feed.
- Anti-blinding ball trays are usually specified on screens finer than 20-mesh.
